Trappen van vergelijkingen
De degrees of comparison zijn de stellende (positive), vergrotende (comparative) en overtreffende (superlative) trap, zoals in het Nederlands bijvoorbeeld "groot, groter, grootst". Deze regels slaan op bijvoeglijke naamwoorden.

Comparative (tweede trap)
Het is dus een vergelijking tussen personen of dingen.

VB:
George is taller than Tim. George is groter dan Tim
Tim is older than John. Tim is ouder dan John.
My bag is more expensive than yours. Mijn tas is duurder dan die van jou.
NOTE! Vergeet het woordje 'than' niet (vergelijking)

Comparative
Hoe weet je nou wanneer je wat gebruikt?
- Bij woorden met één lettergreep:
-> bijvoeglijknaamwoord (adjective) + (e)r
small – smaller
- Bij woorden met twee/drie of meer lettergrepen:
-> more voor het bijvoeglijk naamwoord (adjective)
expensive – more expensive

Superlative (overtreffende trap)
Bij de superlative geef je aan dat iemand/iets het meeste of minste is van iets.

VB: I am tall. I am taller than you. I am the tallest.
You are beautiful. You are more beautiful than me. You are the most beautiful.

Als er één lettergreep is dan gebruik je hele woord +est
VB: smart
She is the smartest in the class.
Als er twee of meer lettegrepen zijn dan gebruik je the + most/least + hele ww
I am the least fit person in my family.

The Past Perfect shows what happened first in the past.

Negatief maken
Past perfect negatief = + not
I had slept > I hadn't slept

Past simple negatif = did + not + hele ww
I slept last night. > I didn't sleep last night

Wat gebeurde er als allereerste in het verleden? = past perfect
Alles wat daarna komt? = past simple

Relative pronouns
who/that: als je wilt verwijzen naar personen
The man who visited my birthday is my father.
These boys, who are learning about maths, are students.
which/that: als je verwijst naar dingen en dieren
This is the car (which) I bought in 2013.
His wedding, which was fantastic, ended with a big party in their house.

The boy whose cat just died will stay at home today.
Johnny, whose mother is an actress, loves acting and dancing.

whom: als je verwijst naar personen (formeel)
That woman (whom) I loved was my wife.
Your colleague, whom I met yesterday, was pretty rude!
