Simple past: verleden tijd, werkwoord + ed / onregelmatig 

- afgelosten gebeurtenissen 

- vragen maken met 'did' + hele werkwoord

- ontkenningen maken met 'didn't' + hele werkwoord

When he was young, he never listened to his father.

Yesterday they bought a new house.

Did you hear the good news? 

We didn't understand what he was talking about. 

Simple past and past continuous

Past continuous: verleden tijd, was/were + werkwoord + ing

- iets was langere tijd in het verleden bezig

- vragen maken 'was/were' vooraan in de zin

- ontkenningen maken met 'wasn't' of 'weren't'

Yesterday at six they were having dinner. 

From 4 to 4.30 she was walking home. 

He wasn't listening while I was talking.

Simple past of past continuous? 

Je gebruikt de past continuous als je wilt aangeven dat iets al langer bezig was, je kunt de simple past gebruiken voor een actie die dat onderbrak.

I was walking home, when the accident happened.

When you called, she was taking a shower.

Let op! Het is dus niet het eerste werkwoord wat je tegenkomt in de zin, maar dat wat als eerste gebeurde waarbij je de past continuous gebruikt!

Simple past of past continuous? 

Je kunt ook twee keer de past continuous in de zin gebruiken, als je wilt aangeven dat twee acties tegelijkertijd een tijdje bezig waren.

While my mother was cooking, I was watching TV.

They were walking home at the same time as their parents were driving home.

Je kunt ook twee keer de simple past gebruiken in een zin, om aan te geven dat twee dingen afgesloten waren in het verleden.

They entered the house and started complaining. 

When I got home I drank a glass of milk. 

Last summer we ... (rent) a holiday cottage.

I ... (receive) your letter on 2 August.

I ... (remit) the money two days ago.

When I saw her, she ... (shop).

He ... (apply) for a job abroad.

When the phone rang, I ... (have) a shower.

Eighty years ago the village ... (develop) into a popular tourist resort.

She ... (drive) on the motorway when her car broke down.

I ... (send) you a text message a few minutes ago.

They ... (transfer) their production to Tunisia.
