 - action in the past now finished
- sequence of past actions
- action interrupting other past action

- two past actions happening at the same time
- action in progress at a specific time in the past
- past action that was interrupted

TO HAVE (past) + PAST PARTICIPLE
- mostly in storytelling (and nursery rhymes)
- actions that took place before a certain time in the past

Past simple: Regular/irregular verbs in the past simple ---> Yesterday I cried a lot.
Past continuous: was/were) +  -ing form of the verb ---> I was cooking dinner.
Past perfect: had + past participle ---> After he had played football, he went home.
