  • Verb + -ed
  • Happened in the past;
  • Time is important

Past simple
Examples:
  • I walked in the part, yesterday.
  • They played a game, last night.
  • He ran five miles, this morning.
  • We studied the grammar, last week.

Past simple
Exceptions:
  • Words end in -e -> +d (arrange -> arranged)
  • Words end in -y -> -ied (study -> studied)
  • Words with short vowel ending in consonant -> double consonant + -ed 
  • (Plan -> planned)
  • More than one syllable ending in -l -> double -l + ed (Travel -> travelled)

  • was/were + verb + -ing
  • When something was going on in the past

Examples:
  • I was planning that, when he came in.
  • He was watering his plants, when it started to rain.
  • They were walking, when they got called.
  • You were studying, when your mom came in.
