> Use the past simple tense while talking/speaking

TASK while reading

1. Write down sentences from the book that are written in the past simple tense.

2. If there are none, try to rewrite other sentences into past simple sentences. (this is a bit more difficult)

Compleet the story. Fill in the blanks with the past simple tense of the verbs in brackets. 

Watch out for irregular verbs!

Last Easter holidays Jimmy and Paul __ (to go) camping in the mountain.

They __ (to spend) a wonderful time there.

They __ (to wake up) early in the morning and then they went for a walk.

In the village they __ (to buy) everything they __ (to need).

In the afternoon they __ (to play) football and __ (to watch) the birds

After dinner they __ (to talk) for a while and __ (to go) to sleep.

One night, Jimmy __ (to have) a very strange dream.

They __ (to be) by the river watching the moon.

Suddenly they __ (to hear) someone calling.

They __(to turn) around and they __(to see) a strange creature.

It __ (to be) green and very small. He __ (to invite) them to go to his spaceship.

There they __ (to meet) other strange creatures and a beautiful princess..

After a while they__ (to feel) a bit strange.

Oh, dear... he __(to turn) green and small like the others.

The princess __ (not/ to be) beautiful anymore and she __ (to look) horrible.

He __ (to open) his eyes and ... what a relief!

Past simple general rule

Past simple = 

Subject + hele werkwoord + -ed

I worked all day.

He walked to the supermarket.

Je gebruikt voor alle personen dezelfde vorm. 

Er is dus geen onderscheidt tussen I, he, she, it, we, you, they. 

To be = was / were

Als er gevraagd wordt om een vorm van to be te gebruiken in combinatie met de past simple gebruiken we was of were

I/ he / she / it  > was

You / we / they > were 

Let op! bij ontkenningen en vragen met to be gebruik je geen did/didn't. Je gebruikt gewoon de past simple vorm van to be. 

I wasn't / was not late. 

Were they angry?
