1. Opsomming

Signaalwoorden die aangeven dat er een opsomming is van twee of meer voorbeelden of onderdelen die bijdragen aan het hoofdpunt in die zin of alinea.

Voorbeelden:

• I like playing football as well as volleybal.
• I love being outside, moreover, I don't even care if it is cold or raining.
• That boy is rude. First of all, he didn't say hello, secondly, he didn't shake my hand, lastly ,he never thanked me for the gift.

2. Oorzaak en gevolg

Deze signaalwoorden geven aan dat er hierna een reden wordt gegeven waarom iets is gebeurd (oorzaak) en/of wat er hierdoor gaat gebeuren (gevolg).

Voorbeelden:

• We all got food poisoning, due to the bad take-out food.
• He brought news of the accident, hence we listened to him attentively.

3. Tegenstelling 

Deze signaalwoorden geven aan dat de tekst een andere kant opgaat dan ervoor. Er komt bijvoorbeeld een argument tegen wat ervoor was gezegd. 

Voorbeelden:

• She is a lovely girl, nevertheless she needs to study harder if she wants to pass her exam.
• I love chocolate as much as the next person, still it is not a healthy snack.
• Peter runs every day, unlike his wife, who never runs.

4. Vergelijking 

Deze signaalwoorden geven aan dat het genoemde hetzelfde is als iets anders, of er mee te vergelijken is. 

Voorbeelden:

• Amsterdam is small, compared to New York.
• The Alps and the Rocky Mountains are equally  impressive.

Deze signaalwoorden geven aan dat er een voorwaarde aan iets wordt gesteld. Doordat er aan iets voldaan wordt, kan er iets anders gebeuren.

• Unless you open the door, you will not be able to get into that room.

6. Voorbeeld & Relativering

Je hebt signaalwoorden die een voorbeeld aangeven. 

Voorbeeld: Some animals live in packs, such as wolves and lions. 

Je hebt ook signaalwoorden die aangeven dat er een relativering volgt. Relativering is iets dat verband houdt met iets dat al eerder is gezegd. Het heeft er wel mee te maken, maar het is niet hetzelfde of een voorbeeld.

Deze signaalwoorden geven aan dat je aan het einde bent gekomen van bijvoorbeeld een verslag of een opsomming van argumenten. 

Voorbeelden:

• We can say that, on the whole, the conference was well-organized.
• All in all, it was a lovely day.

Signaalwoorden die een tijd aangeven lijken misschien makkelijk, maar worden vaak over het hoofd gezien, terwijl ze vaak juist belangrijk zijn om het antwoord te vinden.
