COULD / MAY / MIGHT
 Which one expresses more or less certainty. Compare:
-The restaurant may close. It is likely that the restaurant will close.  
-The restaurant could close. It is less likely that the restaurant will close.
-The restaurant might close. There is only a possibility that the restaurant will close but no one is very sure.
The speaker also shows degree of certainty or uncertainty through intonation and stress. If the speaker stresses the modal verb, they are expressing more uncertainty than if they stress the main verb.

Je gebruikt may en might dus om aan te geven dat iets mogelijk is. In veel gevallen kun je zowel may als might gebruiken. Might geeft iets meer onzekerheid aan dan may . Bij een situatie die niet waar is, gebruik je altijd might!

    can/ could - je beheerst het (could - verleden tijd)
    - I can drive a car because I had lessons.
    to be able to - je bent er toe in staat. de mogelijkheid is er.
    He is able to cheat on the test because the teacher is not looking.

    Can: I can swim because I had swimming lessons
    Could: je beheerste iets maar niet nu meer
    When I was young I could run 4 miles in 12 minutes.

    =>in andere tijden gebruiken we ' to be able to'
    future - I will be able to go on holiday this year.
    present perfect - I have been able to draw this picture.

    It may happen - het zou kunnen gebeuren
    it could happen - het zou misschien kunnen gebeuren
    it might happen - het zou heel misschien kunnen gebeuren.

    MAY & MIGHT

    Beide gebruik je bij een voorstel of als je op een beleefde manier een vraag wilt stellen.

    Bij may vraag je 'Mag ik dit zien?'

    Bij might vraag je  'Zou ik dit mogen zien?'.

    De waarschijnlijkheid waarop iets kan is veel kleiner 
    bij 'might' dan bij 'may'.
