Explore the States of Matter!

What do you already know about the states of matter?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to identify and describe the main states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.

What Do You Already Know?

Share with the class: What do you know about solids, liquids, and gases?

Three Main States of Matter

The three main states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases.

What Is a Solid?

Solids keep their shape, like ice, toys, or a pencil.

What Is a Liquid?

Liquids flow and take the shape of their container, like water or juice.

What Is Matter?

Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass, like air, water, or your desk.

What Is a Gas?

Gases spread out to fill any space. Air and steam are gases.

Class Discussion

Can you name more examples of solids, liquids, and gases?

How Do States of Matter Change?

When a solid heats up, it can change to a liquid. Example: ice melting.

When a liquid cools down, it can change to a solid, like water freezing into ice.

Freezing

Melting

Evaporation and Condensation

When gas cools down, it can change back into liquid, like steam condensing on a window.

Condensation

Evaporation

When a liquid heats up, it changes into a gas, like water turning into steam.

Video: Watch Matter Change

Let's watch a video of ice melting and steam rising!

Try This at Home!

Freeze some water, then let it melt. What do you notice?

Solids All Around Us

Point to 3 solid objects you can see in the classroom.

Let's Find Liquids!

What liquids can you spot in your environment right now?

Where Are the Gases?

Air is a gas. Can you think of other gases nearby?

Quick Quiz!

Is chocolate a solid, liquid, or gas when it's melted?

Class Questions

How do you know if something is a solid, liquid, or gas? Let's discuss!

Hands-On Science

Can you think of a way to change water from a liquid to a gas?

Summary

Matter can be solid, liquid, or gas. It can change from one state to another if it is heated or cooled.
