Past Continuous + Past Simple
De Past Simple gebruik je in de verleden om te vertellen dat iets gebeurd is. --> I walked home. 

De Past Continuous gebruik je in de verleden tijd om aan te geven dat iets in het verleden een tijdje aan de gang was. 
--> I was walking  home. 

Je maakt de Past Continuous door: was/were + hele ww + ing
was voor: I, he/she/it. & were voor: de rest.

Past Simple & Past Continuous
Je gebruikt de Past Simple & de Past Continuous samen als we spreken over een langere actie (past continuous) die onderbroken wordt door een kortere actie (past simple) 

--> I was studying when my mom walked in. 
Het studeren (was studying) was langer aan de gang en werd onderbroken  door de moeder die binnen kwam (walked in).

In de zin: I was studying when my mom walked in. 
Is when een key woord --> na when komt de KORTE actie. (Past Simple) 

In de zin: My mom walked in while I was studying
Is while een key woord --> na while komt de LANGE actie (Past Continuous)

Present Perfect
Je gebruikt de Present Perfect om: 
- te zeggen dat iets in het verleden gebeurd is en nog steeds belangrijk is. 
- te zeggen dat iets in het verleden begonnen is en nog steeds aan de hand is. 
- te praten over ervaringen tot nu toe. 

TIP! Woorden zoals just, recently, already, yet, ever gebruik je vaak in de Present Perfect.

Present Perfect
Je maakt de Present Perfect door: 
have/has + voltooid deelwoord. 
have bij: I, you, we, you, they. 
has bij: he/she/it. 

Voltooid deelwoord is of ww + ed of 3de rijtje van irregular verbs.

Modals
Modal = hulpwerkwoord. 

can, could, should, have to & must zijn modals. Modals zijn anders dan andere werkwoorden want ze veranderen niet van vorm. Behalve have to, dat wordt has to bij he/she/it

have to & should: Je gebruikt have to om te zeggen dat een actie gedaan moet worden, het is verplicht. Je gebruikt should om advies te geven. Je zegt dat het goed is om iets te doen, maar het is niet verplicht.

She has to take her medication. --> verplichting
You should really say sorry to her. --> advies

Must: Je gebruikt must wanneer de spreker zelf vindt dat een actie gedaan moet worden. De spreker verplicht zichzelf. Je gebruikt must ook om iemand sterk aan te raden iets te doen als het niet verplicht is.

You must brush your teeth before bed. --> je raadt het aan. 
I must go to bed early tonight. --> je vind zelf dat het moet

Aanvulling havo
can, could & to be able to. 

can: om verzoeken te doen, toestemming te vragen of te geven, het hebben over mogelijkheden en bekwaamheden. 
to be able to: alleen bij mogelijkheden en bekwaamheden 
could: verleden tijd van can. Deze gebruik je bij formelere verzoeken, als je spreekt over dingen die gebeuren in de toekomst.
