The challenge: to reach every student

René van Blerk, Senior Curator of Education & Interpretation at the Van Gogh Museum, explains the museum's mission: “We are committed to ensuring that every child can learn about Vincent van Gogh’s life and art, regardless of their social background."

The museum uses three key platforms to achieve this goal: online resources, on-site museum experiences, and outreach programmes. They have been working towards this mission since 2017, but the educational content available at the time didn’t fully meet the growing requests of national and international teachers and schools.

With a growing demand for digital learning resources, the museum saw a clear opportunity to help children explore art, and the world around them, safely seated in their classrooms.

We strive to make sure all children learn about Vincent van Gogh’s art and deeds, regardless of their social background. Not every learner has the means to travel to Amsterdam.

Why LessonUp?

The Van Gogh Museum chose LessonUp to provide national and international schools with interactive online learning content for the following reasons:

alt

To make existing lessons more interactive

Thanks to the many features available in LessonUp, the Van Gogh Museum is able to make its learning content interactive.

LessonUp provides different types of digital interaction: drag-and-drop questions, polls, quizzes, mind maps, and the possibility of adding a video to a digital slide. It also offers dynamic teaching tools like hotspots (expandable buttons), and classroom management features like name-pickers.

alt

To promote their lessons both via LessonUp and via their own channel

The museum has its own channel on LessonUp, where all their lessons and educational materials are published. This allows them to easily share their content online with students and educators.

Their lessons are also embedded in their own website, and can be shared with teachers simply by forwarding the lessons’ urls. As a result, the museum has seen an increased use of their lessons both nationally and internationally.

alt

Because of the lessons' ease of use

Teachers can easily use the free lessons from the Van Gogh Museum channel. They can interact with the lessons, and with their students, directly via the classroom's interactive whiteboard.

Students also have many advantages. They enjoy interacting with the lessons, and find them both fun and engaging. They can answer questions directly from their laptops, and don’t need to create a student account to participate.

alt

To have access to insightful statistics

Every company or organisation with a channel receives interesting user data insights. The Van Gogh Museum can check data on lesson views, usage frequency, and channel traffic to measure and optimise their educational impact.

As René explains, "It gives us insights into which lessons are opened, taught, and how often people visit our channel. All these insights allow us to analyse the reach and usage of our lessons."

LessonUp gives us clear insights into which lessons are opened, taught, and how often people visit our channel.

Thousands of visitors across the globe enjoy the Van Gogh Museum channel, ranging from Los Angeles to Melbourne.

Most importantly, thanks to the collaboration between LessonUp and the Van Gogh Museum, all teachers have the opportunity to inspire their students with the life & art of Vincent van Gogh.
